Eliot
Mary Boster's descent from John Eliot:
John Eliot, called the "Indian Apostle," was the author of the first Bible translated into an Amerindian language (Wampanoag). However, the Robens family's descent from him is not certain.
The genealogy as reconstructed by Janis Heidenreich Miller (JHM) is as follows:
Edna T Robens 1883 - 1972 (Mother to Mary Shilts)
Edgar T Robens 1854 - 1935 (Married Rhoda Alexander)
Ibram C Robens 1821 - 1856 (Married Calestina Wilbor)
Betsey Bentley 1789 - 1857 (Married Thomas Robens)
Caleb Bentley 1742 - 1828 (Married Mary Hewitt)
George Bentley 1705? - ? (Married Ruth Barber)
Mary Eliot 1687 - 1734 (Married William Bentley)
Henry Eliot 1650 - 1701 ? (Married Deborah York per JHM, but her name should be Deborah Bell)
Joseph Henry Eliot 1624 - 1667 (Married Deborah York)
Joseph Eliot 1587 - 1650 (Married Judith Eliot (nee Garton).
Laurence Eliot ? - ? (Married Mary Eliot)
Before Mary Bentley (nee Eliot), who married William Bentley, there is a divergence between this reconstruction based on family records and what the current On-Line Ancestry Tree shows:
Mary Eliot Back to Joseph Eliot as Constructed by Janis H Miller:
Mary Eliot N/A* (Married William Bentley)
Henry Eliot N/A* (Married Deborah York per JHM) s/be Deborah Bell (*1)
Joseph Eliot N/A* (Married Deborah York)
Rev. John Eliot 1604 - 1690 (Married Anne Mumford)
N/A* - Birth & Death Dates not indicated in JHM Book
There are indications that Janis Heidenreich Miller's (JHM) genalogy may be inaccurate:
The Reverend Eliot who wrote the Wampanoag Bible was John Eliot 1604 - 1690. He did have a son named Joseph but his birth & death dates (1638 - 1694) do not match the dates listed JHM's genealogy:
Joseph Henry Eliot 1624 - 1667
Joseph Eliot 1587 - 1650
None of the Reverend Joseph's children were named Henry. (The Henry Eliot listed by Janis Heidenreich Miller (JHM) was born in 1650 which would have been a problem for a 12-year-old Reverend Joseph Eliot born in 1638 who was the Joseph Eliot that was the actual son of "The Indian Apostle" John Eliot. The Deborah that Henry Eliot married was apparently the widow of a James York, Jr., but her maiden surname was apparently Bell, and she lived from 1650 to 1719.)
Neither of the Joseph Eliots listed in the Robens' family tree had a father named John.
The ancestors of the Joseph Eliot's in the Robens' family tree go back to County Surrey whereas "Indian Apostle" Elliot traces back to County Hertfordshire.
BUT
The following analysis started out as an effort to pin down the link between the Robens line and John Eliot, The "Indian Apostle" and the author of the first Bible set up in the Indian's language ( in the Wampanoag language).
I suspect that the line back from Edgar Robens that meets the line that goes from the "Indian Apostle" may meet some time way back in England but those of us who might have been proud of a direct link to the "Indian Apostle" the claim might be a stretch.
Family Tree As Reconstructed By DEB:
Portion of JHM Geneology that DEB Considers Accurate:
Edna T Robens 1883 - 1972 (Mother to Mary Shilts)
Edgar T Robens 1854 - 1935 (Married Rhoda Alexander)
Ibram C Robens 1821 - 1856 (Married Calestina Wilbor)
Betsey Bentley 1789 - 1857. (Married Thomas Robens)
Caleb Bentley 1742 - 1828 (Married Mary Hewitt)
George Bentley Circa 1705- ? (Married Ruth Barber)
Mary Eliot 1687 - 1734 (Married William Bentley)
Henry Eliot 1650 - 1701 (*1) (Married Deborah York per JH) s/be Deborah Bell 1650 - 1719 (*2)
Portion of Geneology where DEB Differs with JHM and has Reconstructed based on "Geni"
Joseph Henry Eliot 1624 -1667 (Married Deborah York) 1626 - 1653 (*3) /Note the Reverend Joseph Eliot's Birthday was in 1638
Joseph Eliot 1587 - 1650 (Married Judith Ellyot / nee Garton
Laurence Elllyot (Married Mary Elliott)
I agree with JH Miller's Ancestry Tree up through Henry Eliot but from there on back to the 1500's there's a divergence in what current On-Line Ancestry Trees show and
It is due to the treatment of two different Joseph Eliots
The Joseph Eliot in the Robens/Bentley/Eliot tree should be as follows (per Geni):
Joseph Henry Eliot 1624 - 1667 whose son was Henry Eliot 1650 - 1701
The actual tree that goes through Reverend John & Reverend Joseph during that same period of time is as follows:
Rev. John Eliot 1604 - 1690 Married Anne Mumford)
Joseph Eliot 1638 - 1694 Married Sarah Brenton (1644 - 1683)
& then Mary Wyllys (1656 - 1729 )
N/A* - Birth & Death Dates not indicated in JHM Book
None of Reverend Joseph Eliot's Children were named Henry nor was there another Joseph in the relevant timeframe.
Refer attached Family Member sheets for both Reverends John & Joseph
Issues that indicate that Janis Miller's construction may have gone astray::
The Reverend Eliot who wrote the Indian Bible was John Eliot 1604 -1690
(1) He did have a son named Joseph but his Birth & Death dates (1638 - 1694) do not come close to matching the actual dates as listed in "Geni" for the Joseph Eliots listed by JHM:
Joseph Henry Eliot 1624 - 1667
Joseph Eliot 1587 -1650
(2) None of the Reverend Joseph's children (The Indian Apostle's Grandchildren) were named Henry
(3) Neither of the Robens' Tree Josephs had a father named John going back to Eliotts in Surrey England (Circa 1580's)
(4) The ancestors of the Joseph Eliot's in the Robens Family Tree go back to County Surrey whereas "Indian Apostle" Elliott traces back to County Hertfordshire
Comment: The Henry Eliot listed by Janis Heidenreich Miller (JHM) was born in 1650 which would have been a Problem for a 12 year old Reverend Joseph Eliot born in 1638 which was the Joseph Eliot that was the actal son of "The Indian Apostle" John Eliot
(5) The Sarah Eliot that married the actual Reverend Joseph Eliot was a daughter of Governor of Rhode Island William Brenton (1610 -1674).Given the fact that both fathers were famous people one would expect the Family Tree information to be accurate (for the Following Generation).
(6) The Janis Heidenreich Book indicates "Name Of Wife Not Found" for her "Joseph Eliot (son of Reverend John)"; which wouldn't be likely for people like the two Reverend Eliot's families at that time and the same for children of Sarah Brenton (Refer p83 of JHM Robins - see attached)
(7) The Janis Heidenreich Book also indicates that for her "Joseph Eliot (son of Reverend John)" , only one child had been identified (Henry), whereas the actual Reverend Joseph had 5 children by his first wife (Sarah Brenton) & another 4 by his second wife (Mary Wyllys) - see attached
(8) JHM p83 also indicates her "Reverend Joseph Eliot" moved to New London and then lived in Stonington , whereas the Reverend Joseph Elliot lived in Guiford , Connecticut after some time in Roxbury, MA where he was born
(9) According to the Book "Genealogy of the Descendents of John Eliot "Apostle to the Indians" (You could call it a bible of the Indian Apostle Eliot Descendents) there were only 2 Joseph Eliots that were descendants of the Reverend John between 1604 and 1759. The one that was born in 1638 was the Apostle's son Reverend Joseph that we know is not our ancestor and the other born in 1723, unlikely to have been sired by the Indian Apostle! (Refer attachment 3)
Minor Notes regarding Henry Eliot Birth Date & the 2 "Deborah Yorks" mentioned as the wives of Henry Eliot and Joseph Henry Eliot:
(*1) The Birth and Death Dates of 1650 -1701 noted for Henry Eliot are taken from the Geni Ancestry registry. JHM Family tree shows no dates for Henry's birth & death
(*2) The Deborah that Henry Eliot married was apparently the widow of a James York, Jr., but her maiden surname was apparently Bell, and she lived from 1650 to 1719
(*3) The Deborah that Joseph Henry married appears to have been from a separate York family
CONCLUSION - THE JOSEPH ELIOT THAT JHM SHOWED AS FATHER OF HENRY ELIOT IN HER FAMILY TREE IS CLEARLY NOT THE SAME JOSEPH AS THE REVEREND JOSEPH ELIOT SON OF THE INDIAN APOSTLE REVEREND JOHN ELIOT
I would say there is a less than 1% chance that there is a direct line of Descent from the Indian Apostle Reverend John Eliot to Mary Boster
